MONTHLY MEETING There was a fair attendance of delegates at the monthly meeting of the Workers’ Educational Association, Mr E. W. Jones (president), being in the chair. Correspondence was received from Dr. W. H. Unwin, Dr. William C. Burns, Rev. A. Begg, Mr F. J. Rolleston, Timaru Wharf Labourers’ Union and Literature Class, enclosing donations. The Literature Class, Carpenters’ Union and International Affairs Class, forwarded affiliation fees. The secretary of the General Labourers’ Union notified that Mr J. Keenan had been re-elected as its delegate. The president reported that a deputation representing all sections of the Association had met and made a presentation to Mr A. H. McLintock, who had left for England. It was decided to write to the director of the W.E.A., Professor J. Shelley, congratulating him on his recent appointment. It was agreed to commence a series of Monday night public lectures about the middle of September. The secretary stated that a number of lecturers had promised their services. Final arrangements for the series were left in the hands of the president and secretary. The secretary of the literature class, Mrs Odell, reported that the class had closed for the year. Splendid lectures had been delivered by Messrs Kemshed and Black, the two tutors. The class had showed its appreciation of their services. In his report the secretary stated that two plays “The Merchant of Venice” and “The Oak and the Axe” were entered by members of the Association for the annual drama festival. The former was placed third in the competition. A number of students and friends had accompanied the debating team to Christchurch for the twenty-first birthday celebration's debate. South Canterbury was successful in making a draw with their northern opponents in the debate. It was hoped that North Canterbury would visit .Timaru in the near future for a return debate. Members brought up the question of catering for those students and members interested in drama activities, and it was decided to make some definite move in this direction next year.
