WAIMATE

SATURDAY’S RUGBY GAMES BRIGHT DISPLAYS The main Rugby attraction in Waimate on Saturday was a representati ;o match between the Waimate junior and South Canterbury third grade. Waimate ran out winners in a fast and interesting game by 24 points to 15. The visitors appeared to have the heavier pack of forwards who more than held their own in the tight and gave their backs a major share of the ball. The deciding factor in the game, however,, was the clever combined play of the Waimate backs. In a curtain-raiser Southern defeated Pirates by 8 points to nil in the final of the junior knock-out competition. Southern thus win this competition as well as the junior championship. Waimate v. South Canterbury. Waimate kicked off with the sun behind them and after an exchange of kicks play settled in Waimate territory. The Greens, working hard in the forwards and showing flashes of form in the backs, kept the Blues on defence until Hynes broke away brilliantly and carried to half-way, where O’Connell secured and kicked across field for O’Sullivan to send Williams away at top, but the winger was nicely taken. Waimate then came away in a further passing rush which entrenched them in the Greens’ 25. The movement was then repeated on the other wing for O’Sullivan to cut in and send Richmond over unopposed. Richmond failed to convert. Waimate 3, South Canterbury 0. The Greens appeared to be holding their own in the tight, but were troubled by fast breaking forwards and the concerted play of the Waimate backs. Getting a monopoly of ball from the scrums, the Greens worked their way upfield where Murphy forced a long kick. The Greens came again and from a passing rush Andrews cut in field and threw a long pass to Fitzgerald, who threw himself over beside the posts. Reilly converted. South Canterbury 5, Waimate 3. After a period on defence, Waimate carried to half-way where the Greens were penalised. The Green forwards carried all before them to half-way where they were given a penalty. An exchange of kicks saw play on the Waimate 25, where O’Malley broke through on the blind side and with Richmond in support carr. :d to half-way. Good forward work by the Greens took the visitors close, but O’Sullivan send them with an opportune line kick. The Greens came again with hard, bustling work among backs and forwards and from a < scramble on the line Fitzgerald touched down fairly wide out. Reilly converted. South Canterbury 10, Waimate 3. The Greens were now playing with more confidence and the backs were throwing the ball about. South Canterbury were in danger when Waimate got on to an up and under penalty kick and Richmond just failed to gather in. Waimate kept on the attack with passing rushes on both flanks until O’Sullivan kicked for the line, the bounce beating the defence for Cochrane to touch down. Murphy’s kick went wide. South Canterbury 10, Waimate 6. The Greens set up a persistent attack, but much of the passing by the backs was aimless and gained little ground. Waimate cleared to half-way, but the Greens retaliated with a forward rush which went deep into Waimate territory and the Blues had some anxious moments until Murphy cleared to half-way, a penalty gaining further ground. Then Cochrane came out of the ruck to run brilliantly and ground the ball inches short of the line. South Canterbury were penalised from a scrum on the line and O’Sullivan kicked a neat goal. South Canterbury 10, Waimate 9.

On the resumption after half-time South Canterbury were first on the attack with a passing rush, which saw Williams making a bold bid on the wing. Waimate cleared to mid-field, but the Greens regained ground when O’Malley failed to accept a pass from Ryder. Good line kicking transferred play to the Greens’ 25, where O’Sullivan put Waimate in the lead with a penalty goal. Waimate 12, South Canterbury 10. South Canterbury maintained a territorial advantage for some time until in an exciting interlude, O’Malley broke cleared on the sideline, and exchanging passed with O’Sullivan, sprinted to the Greens’ 23. A Waimate passing rush broke down on the wing, but the forwards carried on for Giles to score. O’Sullivan failed to convert. Waimate 15, South Canterbury 10. From a lineout, Cochrane secured, broke clear and showed a clean pair of heels to the opposition. Richmond’s kick went wide. Waimate 18, South Canterbury 10. Play settled in midfield for a period until the Green forwards carried to Blue territory, and a passing rush gained more ground. O’Connell attempted a field goal and Waimate forced. South Can- I terbury were now playing a livelier game and the backs were throwing the ball about smartly. Most movements, however, went across field and mishandling was frequent. The forwards were showing their mettle and Waimate had several close calls with forward scrambles on the line, but the defence held and eventually cleared to midfield. ‘ The Blues came away in a passing rush and Whatman kicked through for the Greens to force. Then after a period of up and down play Waimate forwards gained ground in a loose rush and Chamberlain picked up outside the 25 and touched down wide out. Murphy failed with the kick.
