The weather was favourable and the wicket perfect for the opening of the cricket match between the M.C.C. team and South Australia. , The captain, E. R. T. Holmes, did not play because of a hand injury. The new leg-before-wicket rule operated for the first time. Lyttelton won the toss and Smith and Parks opened the innings. They gave a sparkling display, tackling the bowling which was not particularly hostile, from all angles. Twelve runs were scored in the first over by Parks and eighteen in the first 20 minutes. Hardstaff and Human were associated in a brilliant partnership. Human made 78 in 45 minutes. He hit nine fours. The first 200 was brought up in 212 minutes and the next century in 73 minutes. In the opening match of the Sheffield Shield series, Queensland v. New South Wales, the latter team in the first innings made 309 for six wickets (McGilvray 68, Easton not out 67, White not out 59, Marks 29, Fellowfleld 28). New South Wales, after losing five wickets for 146, made a remarkable recovery, the seventh wicket partnership adding 101 runs in 84 minutes.
