SOUTH CANTERBURY UNION COMMITTEE MEETS The management committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union met last night. Present: Messrs A. G. Knowles (chairman), C. L. Cutler, D. Keinan, A. B. Rowlands, A, B. Herdman, J. Lillico, M. J. Angland, A. S. Aitken and L. W. Parrant The chairman extended a welcome to Mr Parrant (Temuka). The secretary of the Celtic Club (Mr P. C. Kyne) wrote stating that he had received instructions to notify the Union that the club’s third grade team would not take part in any match which was controlled by Mr H. Lawson. The chairman: We cannot be dictated to by a club as to what referee it is going to have. It was decided on the motion of Mr Aitken that the Celtic Club be informed that referees were appointed by a representative Referees’ Appointment Board and that the Union had nothing to do with referees. The motion was carried without discussion. Mr M. D. Grant, referee of the Old Boys-Star match on Saturday reported ordering off H. Graham, a member of the Old Boys’ team for deliberately striking an opponent. Graham explained to the meeting that he was held by the jersey and in swinging to free himself he came in contact with another player. The chairman: You will not admit striking him intentionally? Graham: No, I was trying to free myself. Mr Parrant moved and Mr Cutler seconded that the player be stood down for two playing Saturdays. An amendment by Messrs Aitken and Herdman that Graham be stood down for one playing Saturday, was carried by a large majority, it being explained- that as the player had been ordered off practically at the start of the game his suspension would really amount to two Saturdays. The South Canterbury-Waimate Sub-Union representative match was fixed for Thursday, May 23. The Otago Union wrote confirming September 4 as the date for the representative match South Canterbury v. Otago at Timaru. Mr A. B. Rowlands was appointed manager of the South Canterbury representatives to play in the trial match, Ashburton-South Canterbury v. Canterbury at Ashburton to-morrow. J. L. Lorimer, a senior player, was granted a transfer from Geraldine to Celtic.

A grant of £5 was made to the Referees’ Association.
