MEETING OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The monthly meeting of Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors was held in the club room, on Wednesday. Present: Mesdames T. E. Holdgate (in the chair), Garton, McLennan, Norrie, Raymond, Washbourn. Misses Hassell, Howell, Mills and the general secretary.

Mrs Holdgate extended the congratulations of the board members to Miss Mills who had been awarded a Jubilee Medal and asked Mesdames Norrie, Satterthwaite and McLennan to convey the good wishes of -the Board to those members of their families who had also received the,, medal. Miss M. Saunders, Girls’ Work Secretary was welcomed by the Board. The secretary reported on the success of the Chinese Fair which had realised more than £2B. Thanks were extended to the Dunedin and Auckland branches of the Y.W.C.A., Mr Timms, Chas Begg and Co. and to all who had helped to make the fair a success.

A letter was received from Miss Vowles, matron of the hostel, asking to be released from her duties in order to take up the position of cafetaria secretary at the Dunedin Y.W.C.A. Miss Vowles resignation was received with regret, and arrangements were made to get into touch with applicants for the position of matron.

Mrs Garton, for the House Committee, reported that the hostel had accommodated 21 transient and five permanent boarders during the month. A new fireplace had been installed in the sitting room. The Hostel required soup plates and new tablecloths.

The Girls’ Work Secretary reported that the Council members and the president of sections had met and discussed plans for the year’s programme. The leaders had also met and preparations for the forming of a Friday night group of girl citizens were well in hand. One basketball team had been entered for the basketball competitions, and there was every prospect of forming another team. A hockey team had also been entered for the hockey competitions. Miss Jean Brewer acting as coach. The senior girls’ report stated that the business girls’ lyceum rally had been held during the month and interest groups for cooking, handcraft, ballroom dancing, drama and Scandinavian folk dancing were being formed. On Thursday nights an open club night would be held and a rally for all groups would be held once a month. The secretary reported that a small number had attended a holiday camp at the Easter week-end which was held at a cottage on the downs, Geraldine. The Round Table Club had met twice since its opening dinner and a syllabus for the year had been drawn up. A hot tea would be served in the club room on Friday nights and the club room would be open every Sunday afternoon between 2.30 and 5. Tea would also be served if required. Mrs Raymond read extracts from the report of the National Board which stated that Miss Jean Stevenson honed to visit Timaru in August.
