W.C.T.U.

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Sailors’ Rest, Mrs Cave presiding over a good attendance. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr J. R. Bruce in the loss of his wife and with the relatives of the late Miss Logan. Several members paid tribute to the long and faithful services given by the late Mrs Bruce in the work of the W.C.T. Union. Her kindly support will be missed in many directions. It was decided to distribute Convention numbers of “The White Ribbon” containing the president’s address. On May 16 members arranged to visit the Old People's Home, providing a programme of entertaniment and afternoon tea. In future executive meetings will be held a week before the ordinary meeting. As Mrs T. E. Taylor was unable to stand for the presidency of the New Zealand W.C.T.U. this year, it was proposed to send her a letter of appreciation from the Timaru branch for the many years of service in the cause. Mr Woodward reported that five overseas vessels visited the port during April. Services had been held on two Sunday evenings. During the Easter holidays the Rest had been used all the time by the visiting sailors; 110 men paying 400 visits. Papers, books and magazines are badly needed and gifts of same will be welcomed. The Wellington and Auckland Unions forwarded two parcels of knitted scarves for men. A deputation from the “Y” Union waited on the meeting re plans of work. At a social evening which followed, thanks were expressed to Mrs Naylor for vocal sdlos, Miss Rudge for piano solos and Miss Munro for items on the violin, all of which were greatly enjoyed. Mrs Cave gave sidelights on work at convention.
