FOUR NEW MEMBERS ON COUNCIL SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY Although there was no contest for the mayoralty yesterday, Mr B. R. Macdonald having been re-elected unoposed for a further term, the fact that 12 candidates offered themselves for six seats on the Geraldine Borough Council stimulated interest in the election, whereas two years ago only the required number of candidates were nominated. The poll on the halfholiday question also proved an incentive to electors to record their votes. Although voting was quiet but steady during the morning, the officials had a busy time during the afternoon and up till the booths closed at 7 p.m. A large crowd awaited the results of the polls. At No. 2 booth in Talbot Street south, results were available at 8.35 p.m., but the polls at the Council Chambers were not announced till shortly after 10 p.m. Mr E. B. D. Logan, a new candidate, headed the poll. Mr Logan is a son of Mr E. H. Logan, who had 30 years service on the council to his credit and who did not offer his services for the coming term. Mr A. J. Bell, of the present Council secured second place, and the present Deputy-mayor (Mr J. R. Lack) third place, Messrs H. Russell, P. H. Davis and Z. O. Sherratt were the other successful candidates, the last-named being a son of a former councillor, Mr V/. A. Sherratt. who did not stand for the new Council. Borough Council (Six Seats)

On the poll being announced, the elected candidates expressed thanks to the electors for the confidence shown in them, several of the defeated candidates expressing their congratulations to the new councillors. A vote of thanks to the returning officer (Mr B. Hayes) was carried on the motion of Mr G. H. Patrick, a member of the present Council, who was unsuccessful at the poll. Half-Holiday The half-holiday poll was closely contested, electors deciding in favour of Saturday by a margin of 30 votes.

Davey 109 Informal 4 SALE OF WORK An attractive display of flowers, vegetables, and home industries filled the well laden stalls in the Parish Hall yesterday when an energetic committee under Mrs Ron McLeod, held a sale of work to raise money for the Geraldine District Nurse fund. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE In keeping with the Jubilee celebrations, the Geraldine Women’s Institute ararnged an “Empire Night” for its monthly meeting on Tuesday. Representatives of the various countries, dressed in costume, were presented to the “King” and, together with the Loyal address and sallies on local celebrities created much amusement. The president (Miss M. Cruickshank) occupied the chair. A motion of sympathy was extended to Mrs A. G. Brown in the sudden death of her sister. Mesdames Ashby and L. J. Bennington and Miss Collins were elected members. It was announced that the Timaru Women’s Club would give a concert in June. The invitation to attend the Gapes Valley Institute concert and social was also received. Mrs G. R. Knibb was appointed delegate to the annual conference at Auckland. Mrs A. G. Brown appealed for helpers in connection with the Institute Arts and Crafts exhibition in Timaru in June. A one act play entitled “The Hikers” (written by Mrs V. Targuse) was produced by Mrs W. H. Kirk, the cast being as follow: Mrs Kirk, Miss Harris, Misses Henry (2), C. Rule and R. Glover.

Competitions were won as follow: Sponge cake, Mrs H. Mitchelmore 1, Mrs Davis 2, Mrs H. Maister 3. Best ararnged bowl of chrysanthemums, Miss M. Cruickshank 1, Mrs H. Mitchelmore 2, Mrs C. J. Hayward 3. Best darned sock, Mrs H. V. Firman 1, Mrs R. Tagg 2, Mrs H. Mitchelmore 3. PERSONAL Mrs T. Mitchell, Misses Winifred and Joan Mitchell (Hilton), and Miss Hilda Scott (“The Downs.” Geraldine), have returned after a three weeks’ holiday in Timaru. Mrs H. Hill (Pleasant Valley) has returned from Timaru. FOOTBALL CLUB The president (Mr W. H. Jackson) presided over a meeting of the committee of the Football Club held on Tuesday. Present: Messrs S. Lawson, I. Anderson, K. Loach, L. Neutze, J. Caims, J. Stevenson, G. Pratt, TI. South, H. Wilson, E. Wood and A. H. Stringer. Apologies were received from Messrs P. M. McKenzie and J. S. Lorimer. Mr H. Ford was elected a member. Itl was decided to enter a fifth grade team in the competition if the Rugby Union would accept a late entry. Mr J. L. Lorimer was granted a clearance from the club. It was decided to issue 10 unemployed passes for matches this season, Mr J. Stevenson to be in charge of them. The following will represent the fourth grade against Celtic at Geraldine No. 1 on Saturday: H. South, J. South, G. Pratt, M. Chapman, R. Hayes, D. Pierce, J. Stevenson. ■ Leary, W. Payne. C. The Geraldine Players will present four one-act plays in the Town Hall at 8 o’clock to-night in aid of the District Nurse fund. Mr E. Cholerton, Optical Specialist, proprietor of Procter’s, the Premier Opticians, Christchurch, will be visiting Geraldine, personally, and may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel, on Wednesday, 15th May Appointments can now be made by ringing Mr Morris Williams, chemist.
