PEEL FOREST

GOLF On Monday afternoon a stroke handicap competition was held on the Peel Forest homestead golf links. The winner was W. Jenkins, with a net score of 70. A ladies’ competition over nine holes was won by Miss Helen Jenkins with a net score of 52. THE WEATHER Although only 20 points of rain fell over the week-end, bitterly cold weather was experienced on Sunday. A light sprinkling of snow fell on Saturday night. The weather on Monday and Tuesday was fine but unsettled. The weather during the first two weeks of April was exceptionally fine and mild, but over Easter, and the

latter part of the month much colder and changeable conditions were experienced. Rain fell on nine days for a total of 3.10 inches, the maximum fall being 74 points on April 11. The following were the detailed recordings: April 3, 59 points: April 6, 22 points; April 10, 15 points; April 11, 74 points; April 26, 58 points; April 27, 22 points; April 28, 23 points; total, 3.10 inches, as compared with 3.35 inches in 1934 and 2.48 inches in 1933. The total rainfall to date is 14.87. Corresponding totals for the same periods were: 1934, 20.49 inches; 1933, 11 inches. JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS A large number of children and residents of the district attended a bonfire on Monday evening, arranged by Commander and Mrs G. H. Dennistoun. A most enjoyable time was spent in community singing of patriotic and old-time songs. Several solos and recitations were also given. Supper was provided, and each person received a piece of jubilee cake. At the conclusion of the gathering a vote of thanks was passed to Commander and Mrs G. H. Dennistoun for their hospitality. SOCIAL EVENING On Saturday evening a most enjoyable party was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs W. A. Macphail. in honour of Mr and Mrs J. C. Webb on reaching the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding day. A most happy evening was spent with games, competitions, musical and vocal items, and the singing of old-time songs. Mr E. S. Foden on behalf of those present, presented Mr and Mrs Webb with two handsome easy chairs. Mr Foden, in the course of his speech, conveyed to Mr and Mrs Webb the best wishes of the company, and expressed the esteem and respect in which they were held. The supper room was tastefully decorated. The toast of “The Bride and Bridegroom” was proposed by Mr H. E. Smith, an old friend of Mr and Mrs Webb. Mr Webb, in reply, thanked everybody for their gift and expression of good wishes to Mrs Webb and himself. During the evening competitions were won by Misses Sim, Elliot, M. Rutherford and M. Foden, Mrs A. Webb, Mr A. Allen and Mr L. Evans. Those present were:—Mr and Mrs JC Webb, Mr and Mrs W. A. Macphail, Mr and Mrs A. Webb (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs H. E.
