TEMUKA

RESULT OF LOCAL ELECTIONS CHANGES ON COUNCIL Although there was no election for the Mayoralty, Mr A. W. Buzan having been re-elected unopposed, the electors of Temuka yesterday were called upon to vote for a borough council, representation on the South Canterbury Electric Power Board, and the town’s weekly half-holiday. Interest in the poll for the half-holi-day threatened to overshadow the Council election. The electors decided on a change from Thursday to Saturday by a majority of 253. In the nine elected to the Borough Council there were five of the retiring Council—Messrs W. F. Evans, I. W. T, Baxter, W. H. McMillan, J. King and P. H. Lynch. Two former councillors J. Burns and J. Gourley—were among those returned, and there were also two candidates new to municipal work—Messrs C. D. Hayhurst and M. Giles. The unsuccessful candidates were Messrs G. Hancox, the retiring Deputy-Mayor, L. F. Robins and J. H. Forrester. For the three seats allotted the Temuka and Geraldine Boroughs and Geraldine County, Messrs T. H. Langford, A. W. Buzan and K. Mackenzie were elected, while Mr Mackenzie and Mrs I. Hewson were each elected unopposed to the seats allocated the Temuka and Geraldine Boroughs on the Timaru Harbour Board and South Canterbury Hospital Board, respectively. Polling took place at the Oddfellows' Hall and Fire Brigade Station, as well as the Borough Council Chambers, and after the election the candidates addressed a crowd of several hundreds from the steps of the Chambers. The Mayor thanked the electors for returning him a good council although there were men unsuccessful who had rendered splendid service to the borough. He felt confident that the new council would worthily follow its predecessors. The town had decided on a change in its half-holiday along with others of its size in South Canterbury. It was satisfactory that all had changed at the same time, and he hoped that the alteration would prove beneficial. He thanked the electors for returning him to the Council. After the other candidates had spoken, cheers were given for the retiring Council, new members and the Returning Officer (Mr L. Butters). The results were:— Borough Council. Based on man’s struggle for security through the ages, this unusual film answers the questions bewildered humanity is asking to-day. And in its telling, the story casts a magic spell over the listener. To two young players. Winfield Sheehan, the producer, has entrusted the major burden. They are the glamorous Madeleine Carroll and that very able actor, Franchot Tone—and they carry it well. Miss Carroll is not only lovely to behold—with her fresh, starry-eye beauty—but she succeeds admirably in breathing life into the character she portrays. And Tone is the perfect choice for her screen teammate. The two principals receive splendid support from a big cast including Reginald Denny, Siegfried Rumann. Louise Dresser, Roulien, Stepin Fetchit.

Mr E. Cholerton, Optical Specialist, proprietor of Procter’s, the Premier Opticians, Christchurch, will be visiting Temuka, personally, and may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel, on Saturday, 18th May. Appointments can now be made by ringing the U.F.S. Dispensary

RHEUMATISM R-U-R ENDS 3 YEARS’ SUFFERING “I suffered for three years with my arms and hands,” writes Mrs O’Sullivan, Waitoa. “I could not write, sew, darn, milk or do anything requiring me to close my hands much. It took me all my time to hold the knife to peel vegetables. I wouldn’t get any more sleep after three o’clock in the morning with the pains. It was terrible agony. After the first packet of R-U-R I took there was a slight improvement and the second one worked wonders, and I can honestly tell you I feel a new woman.” R-U-R is sold with money back guarantee by the following chemists: E. J. Thompson, Timaru; A. N. Hancock, Temuka; B. A. Bryan, Waim&te; Morris Williams, Geraldine. Ask for free booklet
