WASHDYKE
HOUSEHOLDERS’ MEETING There was only a moderate attendance at the annual meeting of householders. Mr T. J. Atherton presided. The headmaster reported that the roll number was 71 and the average attendance 64. Eleven pupils sat for the proficiency examination. Nine were successful and two gained competency certificates. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted. The balance sheet showed a credit of £5 16s. The report covered the committee’s activities during the year and complimented the headmaster and staff on the good results obtained. Special mention was made of the improvements carried out at the school and the installation of the electric light. Mention was also made of the efforts the committee had made to have the water supply service improved. A long discussion took place on this matter, the opinion being held that the filtering system recently installed would not bring about any material improvement. It was felt that in prolonged periods of dry weather the water in the underground tank would become stagnant and be unfit for use. It was resolved that the committee be requested to continue its efforts to have an electric pump installed so that a fresh water supply would be made available to the children for all time. Eulogistic reference was made to the excellent work done by the cpmmittee, which was accorded a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence. At a subsequent meeting of the committee the following arrangements for the King’s Jubilee celebrations were approved for May 10—Parade of school children, saluting the flag, address to the children before the presentation of a book to every child, and the planting of a tree (native), a commemoration plate to be provided. It was further resolved to have a “parents’ day,” in conjunction with the celebrations. Ladies were requested to bring a basket, tea, sugar and milk to be provided by the committee.
