WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
GLENITI At the monthly meeting of the Gleniti Women’s Institute, Mrs Winnington presided over a good attendance and extended a welcome to visitors from Pareora and Pleasant Point, also congratulations to the Paerora Women’s Institute on its success at the recent folk dancing competitions. Best wishes were extended to Miss Margaret Browne on the eve of her wedding. Miss Kime, Mesdames Cartwright and Taylor, gave most interesting talks on brass work, barbola work and the re-covering of umbrellas which were much appreciated by all present. The hostesses were Mesdames Robinson, Bower, Pearse and Misses Pearse and Elliott. The competitions resulted:—l2 heaviest gooseberries, Mrs Bower 1. Mesdames Peterson, Robinson and Miss Southgate, equal 2, Mrs D. Ramsay and Mrs Morse, equal 3; best shopping bag, Mrs Morse 1, Mrs Clark. Mrs D. Ramsay, equal 2, Mrs Esler 3; sponge roll, Mrs L. Clark 1, Mrs Morse 2. Mrs D. Ramsay 3; specimen bloom. Mrs E. H. Pearse. A guessing competition for a prize given by Mrs D. Ramsay was won by Mrs L; Clark. HINDS At the monthly meeting of the Hinds Women’s Institute, the president (Mrs J. McQuilkin) presided over a large attendance of members. The delegates. Mesdames McQuilkin and Dellow, gave reports on the halfyearly meeting of the South Canterbury " Federation, held at Temuka. Miss Watt, Matron of the Ashburton Hospital, gave an interesting talk on food values, which was much appreciated by members. Many questions were answered by Miss Watt, who later was accorded a vote of thanks. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Joiner, A. Lowe. I. R. McElhinney. The competitions resulted: —Specimen bloom, Mrs Tarbotton 1, Mrs Joiner 2; scones, Mrs Tarbotton 1. Miss Faith Rickard 2 and 3; child’s school lunch, Mrs McQuilkin 1, Mrs Tarbotton 2, Miss Faith Rickard 3. Large entries and many beautiful blooms were two features of the display of roses, which was judged by the Rev. Basil Taylor. Awards were made as follows:—Premier rose (6) Mrs Tarbotton, three roses (5) Mrs Tarbotton 1, six roses (2) Mrs Tarbotton 1; decorated bowl of flowers (11), Mrs J. Marshall 1. collection of pansies (3), Mrs Tarbotton 1.
