United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received December 18, 8.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, December 18. The Federal Cabinet takes a gloomy view of the trade position with Germany, and sees no hope of any arrangement by which Germany will be able to participate in the current wool sales. Sir Henry Gullett, Minister Directing Trade Treaties, said: “The serious obstacle to trade agreement is that Germany is on the gold standard. It would require enormous tariff concessions to enable her to export goods to Australia, while the bulk of the goods she could export would compete with Australian or British.” ANOTHER LINE OF BARTER NEGOTIATION IN IRISH FREE STATE Cnlted Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received December 18, 11.30 p.m.) LONDOfI, December 18. ALL EYES ON GERMAN PLAN United Press Association—By Electric Tel egraph —Copyrlgh t LONDON, December 17. The Wool Federation has appointed a delegation to watch the effects of the South American and South African bartering with Germany. It says that the textile mercury scheme is unlikely to affect wool values. It may temporarily harden the South African market, but adds that barter may seriously affect British exports to the South African market, perhaps infringing the spirit of the Ottawa Agreement.
