THE SCHOOLS

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONIES

TIMARU WEST The Timaru West School held its annual break-up ceremony yesterday in the quadrangle of the school. Mr J. E. Chiles presided, in the absence of Mr Laverty, and associated with him on the platform were the Rev. H. L. Fiebig, the headmaster, Mr H. C. Romans, and members of the staff. Mr Chiles, in his opening remarks, said that it was incomprehensible to him why this ceremony should be termed “break-up.” “As you children get older you will come to understand more what the school means to you.” He then extended a welcome to all present. The school then sang “The Sicilian Maid,” and following this the Navy League Essay certificates were presented by Mr Chiles, one of the Standard VI boys having gained second place in the Canterbury lists. The principal speaker, the Rev. H. L. Fiebig, then addressed the gathering. He congratulated the school on the year’s work, and the staff on the fine tone of the school. He said that the year had been a good one, and the pupils should be proud of such a school and appreciate all that had been done. He said they had excellent buildings, and the committee had worked hard during the past year for the school. To those leaving, he said that they would have to stand on their own feet and not expect other people to do all their work for them. People would always be willing to help, and it was up to them to take advantage of it. He urged pupils to preserve the good name of the school, and in conclusion wished all the compliments of the season. Mr G. Calder then presented the attendance certificates, the headmaster making special mention of the achievement of Orma Segar and Nancy Romans, who every year during their primary school careers had received a certificate. This was followed by a song by the senior pupils, and the presentation of the proficiency certificates, by the chairman. The duces of the school, Nancy Romans and George Ridley were presented with their medals by Mr Fiebig. Margaret Hughes was also presented with the A.M.P. essay prize. Mr T. Palliser, speaking to the children, asked them how long the holidays were. “Six weeks,” was the reply. “Who do you think deserve longer holidays?” and the reply came “The teachers.” He paid a tribute to the work of Mr Calder who is retiring in the school. He then called for cheers for Mr Calder. The headmaster stated that the year had been good considering the sickness, 52 out of 53 pupils passing the proficiency examination, while in the sporting world the school had done quite well. He thanked Mr Calder for his work during the year, and said that he re--1 gretted his retirement but hoped to see much more of him. A tribute was also paid to his staff for the excellent work during the year.
