TEMUKA

ESSAY PRIZES COME TO HAND R. S. A. COMPETITION The banner which the Temuka District High School won in the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association’s essay competition, together with the prize for the year’s best essay, won by Pat Snow, and certificates for the four competitors who comprised the winning team, have been forwarded to the Temuka R.S.A. The presentation will take place at the breaking-up ceremony of the school, when representatives of the Returned Soldiers’ Association will attend. The banner is of black silk, lettered in gold, and the competition, commenced in 1922, has been won by Temuka in 1924 and 1927 as well as this year. Two essays in each of Standards 5 and 6 in each school competing are awarded certificates, and the Temuka winners were Pat Snow and Catherine Benbow in Standard 6, and Ona Baxter and Jack Cornwell in Standard 5. The Temuka aggregate, 289 points, was four points better than that of Waimataitai. In addition to the certificate that the organisers award, the Temuka Association has always presented a book to the pupil gaining the highest marks in any year that the Temuka School has been successful. BOWLING For its singles championships this season the Temuka Bowling Club will use a new system of play, known as the “Bagnell Wild” system, the controller of competitions (Mr H. B. Strange) stated yesterday. I.lr Strange said that as in other seasons, each player will have two lives, but instead of having to play in rotation the competitors have been placed in each of two sections, which will proceed independently of one another until the final. The advantage is that supposing A were drawn against B and A happened to be ill or unable to play for some weeks, B could proceed by playing the opponent he was drawn against in the other section. The effect will be that the competitions will be despatched much more expeditiously and that one player will not be able to hold the competitions up for weeks. The draw for the A grade championship, under the new system is: — A Section: G. L. Collins v. W, McCallum; R. H. Taylor v. A, Meek; F. A. Joynt v. M. Giles; Dr, A. S. Mclnnes v. J. Gourley; J. B. Davis v. G. I. Marshall, H. B. Strange v. F. Smith; T. Edwards v. T. Harvey, L. G. Scrimshaw v. A. Hope. B Section: Hope v. Gourley; Taylor v. Strange; Davis v. Collins; McCallum v. Marshall; Smith v. Meek; Joynt v. Edwards; Giles v. Harvey; Scrimshaw v. Mclnnes. The date for commencement of play has not yet been settled, and the draw for the B grade championship will be made next week. Those to play for Temuka in a Centre match against West End at Temuka on Thursday will be:—Joynt, Beck, Collins, McCallum (s); Keys, Longson, Taylor, Dr. Mclnnes (s); Clark, Palmer, Scrimshaw, Smith (s); Strange, Stewart, Davis, Edwards (s).
