1874 BALL RECALLED
LADY LINCOLNSHIRE’S DEATH Lady Lincolnshire, who died at her home at Campden, Gloucestershire, last month, was Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Alexandra for 14 years, and was her personal friend. She was 78 years of age. With the death of Lady Lincolnshire, the Duchess of Montrose, says the “Manchester Guardian,” remains almost the only survivor of the ladies present at the famous costume ball at Marlborough House in 1874, both of them taking part in the “Fairy Tale Quadrille,” in which the Duke of Connaught also figured. Mr Disraeli was the only guest allowed to appear on the occasion in evening clothes. The crustiest Tory never had a bad word for Lord Lincolnshire, despite his Radical tendencies, and no little of his intense popularity was due to his gracious wife, who retained her delicate beauty to the end. They both adored their only boy, born comparatively late in their lives, but they did nothing to keep him back from the front when he was only 19 years old, and their answer to Lord Kitchener’s message of sympathy was: “We have only to thank God for giving us so brave a son.”
