STOCK THEFTS
LOSSES BY NIGHT The problem presented by frequent theft of stock was considered by the Hawke’s Bay County Council when it was decided to take steps with a view to prohibiting the transport of stock by night, except with special permit. The seriousness of the position was stressed by the chairman, Mr F. B. Logan, who stated that he himself had suffered last year, his crutchings having been stolen and taken away in a lorry by night. There had been many other cases in the district and the crime was an exceedingly difficult one to detect. “It is really not a matter for the council, but for the police. Yet the police cannot be expected to handle it. They are busy patrolling the town areas and could not be expected to patrol the country as well,” said Mr Logan. Continuing, the chairman stated that last year the council wrote to the Transport Board suggesting that the regulations regarding the transport of stock should be tightened up with a view of stopping the theft of stock. They had got no further than that, however, and he suggested that the counoil should draft a by-law prohibiting the carriage of stock at night, except by special permit. The suggestion was adopted.
