ITS ROLE IN HISTORY Another landmark of the nineteenth century passes in the Three Roses Inn of Miskole, Hungary, which is being reconstructed as a block of flats. Like most Hungarian inns of the period, the Three Roses was a spacious two-storeyed building in which the landed gentry of the neighbourhood gathered for the country balls, and where foreign royalties stayed when travelling through the country. The journel “Nemzeti Ujsag” recalls that in 1848 the great patriot Kossuth poured fiery words on the populace from the balcony of the Three Roses. Dressing himself as a sweep he gained entrance to the inn, and succeeded in passing the armed guards and gaining entrance to the Emperor’s study. Once inside, however, the journalist found that he was expected to commence operations on the large china stove, and opening ft discovered a crumbled scrap of paper, which proved to. be a telegram written by the Emperor and addressed to the Tsar. Next morning the telegram, which turned on the question of war or peace, was reprinted in full in two local papers. All Europe was thrown into ferment, and the luckless journalist was consigned to prison for some years.
