SWIMMING

SOUTH CANTERBURY CENTRE ANNUAL REPORT The annual report of the South Canterbury Swimming Centre is as under; The Temuka Club again was the first with a carnival, and it was a great success, swimmers from all clubs contesting the events. This was followed in February by another carnival, this also being a success. At this carnival the 100 yards championship of South Canterbury was swum and won by R. Sutherland (Old Boys). On January 18, the West End Club held its inter-club carnival, and in good weather it came well up to expectations. The Old Boys’ Club held a successful carnival on February 1, and on its programme this club had the South Canterbury diving championship, which, after very exciting competition, was won by V. McKeague. We congratulate the place-getters in this event on the advancement they have made in this section of the sport. The Waimate and Geraldine clubs held carnivals late in February, both attracting a large number of spectators. The Waimate Club in particular had splendid entries, and was perhaps the most successful carnival held in this district. The Timaru Ladies’ Club held its usual weekly swims, and ended its season with a very enjoyable afternoon early in March. This club was always well represented at all inter-club carnivals. Your Centre was well represented at the carnivals, and gave the clubs valuable assistance in helping to run their events. The 440 yards harbour race was swum on the evening of January 25, and after a good race, was won by D. Parsons (West End) with Miss A. Keen (West End) second, and R. Sutherland (Old Boys) third. The Speechly Mile event was again attended by a large number of spectators, which was evidence of the public interest taken. From a swimming point of view this event was a disappointment, the water being so cold that only six of the 17 competitors completed the distance. After a hard race under these conditions, the winner proved to be Miss A. Keen, with J. Bryce 2, and Miss Akins 3. Miss A. Keen has also to be congratulated on the fact that she registered fastest time. The junior and intermediate New Zealand championships were held in Palmerston North, and the Centre was represented by Miss M. Lattimer, of the Timaru Ladies’ Club, and Master H. Pateman, of the West End Club. Pateman, in winning the 100 yards junior championship, and swimming second in the 220 yards junior championship, ha's to be congratulated on his performances. Miss M. Lattimer swam well but was unplaced in her events. The senior championships were held in Christchurch, and the Centre was represented in the championship dive by V. McKeague and K. Moffatt, who though putting up creditable performances, were unplaced. At a meeting of centres we were fortunate in having the junior and intermediate championships allotted us for the coming season. Educational Work. In fine weather the South Canterbury primary school sports were held in the Century Baths. After keen competition the shield was won by the Main School. The following is the list of certificates issued to the South Canterbury schools last season:—

The total of of 303 is a decrease of 99 on the previous year, but considering the unsatisfactory weather experienced, it reflects great credit on the efforts of the teachers. The finance of your Centre stands with a credit balance of £139/9/11. In conclusion we wish to place on record the services rendered to us during the season by Mr L. E. Eaton (hon. auditor), Mr F. G. Dunn (delegate on the New Zealand Council), the local newspapers for their publicity, and Mr A. Provan (handicapper.

WEST END CLUB At the West End bath, the West End Club officially opened the 1934-35 season. In the absence of Mr J. C. Chiles, Mr Renton, secretary to the West End Ratepayers’ Association, declared the season open. During the course of his remarks, Mr Renton mentioned that the West End Club was one of the largest and most successful clubs in the Dominion, having been inaugurated six years ago. He hoped that the club would retain its present popularity, and continue to extend its activities by encouraging and promoting every branch of aquatic sport. He thanked the Ladies’ Committee for their interest and help to the club, and wished all the members a very successful season. In spite of a cold wind which sprang up, the members, young and old, had an initial dive and swim, after which a welcome afternoon tea was thoughtfully provided by the ladies. In spite of threatening weather, there was a good muster of members and friends present, and the afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed.
