Dr F. W. W. Dawson (Christchurch) and Mr B. Pinckney (Waikaia) are staying at the Grand. Mr H. J. Knight (Wellington), who was in Timaru for the sitting of the Transport Licensing Authority, returned north yesterday. Mr R. M. Watson, SM, of Feilding, returned by the Marama on Tuesday from Japan and the East, where he spent several months.
Mr James Bertram, a 1932 Rhodes scholar, and son of the Rev. I. E. Bertram, of Devonport, has been awarded a “first” in English at Oxford University. Advice has been received in Wellington that Dr. Earl Northcroft, PhT). (N.Z.), has completed the medic .1 course at Edinburgh University. Dr T. G. Gray, Director-General of Mental Hospitals, is a passenger by tne lonic, which left for England on Wednesday. Dr Gray will probably be absent for about five months. Mr E. S. Brittenden (Christchurch), of the District Traffiic Department of New Zealand Railways, who was attending a session of No. 8 District Licensing Authority in Timaru, returned north yesterday.
Messrs J. D. Hutchison (Christchurch) and M. Bethell (North Canterbury) of the Transport Licensing Authority, returned north yesterday afternoon at the conclusion of the Authority’s session in Timaru. Messrs E. Pelin. A. Messervy. G. H Humphries (Christchurch), F. P. Cometti, D. G. Reilly (Dunedin), D. Brooker (Auckland) and O. Shikina (Wellington) are registered at the Dominion. Messrs G. L. Reese. E. W. Barnard. R. Hanham, W. Drake, W. Spong, 11. W. Watson (Christchurch), W. F. Townsend (Dunedin) and T. A. D. Wilson (Ashburton) are staying at*the Empire. * The Rev. H. J. Odell, minister of the Thorndon Methodist Church, has accepted an invitation to the Napier charge. Subject to ratification by the New Zealand Methodist Church Conference in February, the change will take place in April. Mr Odell has been at Thorndon for more than thrne years. Messrs G. Wilhelmsen, P. Beaumont, A. Cannon. A. McAllister, W. Miller, I. Clements, W. Duff. F. Grant, C. Hamilton, A. Bedford, A. E. Donnolly (Dunedin), T. D. Barker, R. H. Neville (Christchurch), and W. McCallum (Wellington) are staying*at the Grosvenor. The fine work of Mr W M. Ste '.rt, Commissioner of Crown Lands, in his ex officio capacity us chairman of the Selwyn Plantations Board, was gratefully acknowledged by board members on Wednesday at a luncheon held in Mr Stewart’s honour. The board presented him with a travelling rug as a memento of his long and successful term of office. Mr Stewart has been appointed Valuer-General and will be leaving shortly for Wellington.
