MISS BATTEN’S TOUR
CRITICISM EXPRESSED AT HASTINGS By Telegraph—Press Association HASTINGS, July 26. Criticism of the Department of Internal Affairs in associating itself to the extent it had iff the tour of Miss Jean Batten was expressed by members of the Hastings Borough Council this evening. It was made clear, however, that it was not intended to belittle Miss Batten or her performance, but it was the methods adopted by the Department that evoked criticism. A programme forwarded by the Department was before the council in connection with Miss Batten’s Hastings visit.
The Mayor (Mr G. A. Maddison) explained that Miss Batten would be accompanied by two Government machines. She was under contract to appear at certain theatres. “We can only adopt the proposals for I understand that the 'Department will not agree to any changes,” he said. Councillors opposed the Department arranging the programme and insisting on its adoption, one coucillor characterising it as a piece of impertinence.” Another said it was a ridiculous thing ana childish. The Council formally agreed to adopt the proposals.
