GENERAL NEWS

Art Union Winner. The winning ticket in the “Change of Luck” Art Union is held by Vincent Sotheran, of Auckland, his aunt, Mrs D. A. Lusk and three other relatives. Alarm of Fire. A heap of smouldering ashes in the back yard of a residence in Orbell Street prompted the summoning of the Fire Brigade at about 3.45 yesterday afternoon. The services of the Brigade were not required.

Otipua Lagoon Outlet., Before the new outlet to the Otipua Lagoon was constructed, the Otipua Creek at times became stagnant, and in places was from 10 to 12 feet in depth. At one period the water came within six inches of the arch of a small stone bridge on the Landsborough road, but now the stones in the bed of the creek are visible, indicating the efficiency of the work at the outlet.

Long Honrs. At the hearing of a case before No. 8 Transport Licensing Authority in Timaru yesterday, an applicant admitted having worked 20 hours on one occasion, but denied that it had knocked him out. The chairman said that they did not wish to stop a man pushing h business, but it was inadvisable to work such long hours, not only from the point of view of the man himself, but from that of other users of the road.

Grading of Wheat. The Wheat Purchase Board’s grader has been busy taking samples of various lines of South Canterbury wheat in the stores, and so far merchants have not received any advice as to the quantity that will be taken under the Board’s scheme. Wheat which was rejected some time ago is being tested for moisture content, and owing to the quantity sampled, it' will take some time before the results of the tests are known.

Ready to Sign. While discounting the importance attachable to a petition submitted by an applicant for a license to the Transport Licensing Authority yesterday, the representative of the Railway Department (Mr E. S. Brittenden) said that in Christchurch all one had to do was to put a petition up in Cathedral Square .and everyone would sign It. “They do a lot of things in Christchurch that they would not do in other places,” remarked the chairman (Mr J. D. Hutchison).

Seed Wheat Inquired For. Owing to the wet season, farmers are now inquiring for lines of seed wheat suitable for spring sowing, such as Jumbuck, Marquis and Garnet. It is apparent that there will not be the quantity of wheat grown this season as last, and present indications point to a scarcity of Hunters. It is thought that so far as spring sowing is concerned farmers will not be inclined to provide for big acreages as unless a suitable season is experienced, the growing of spring wheat is regarded as risky.

Drivers’ Award.

At the meeting of the Borough Council, when the recommendation of the Finance Committee that Crs. W. H. Hall and H. J. Mathers should be appointed to discuss conditions of employment with representatives of the Drivers’ Award, Cr. P. C. Vinnell moved that Cr. G. Benstead should be appointed an additional representative. The motion was seconded by Cr. P. B. Foote and carried. Cr. Vinnell said that Cr. Benstead had previously represented the Council at such conferences.

Visit of Debating Team. Negotiations have been entered into by the South Canterbury Junior Chamber of Commerce for the Washington University debating team to visit Timaru during their tour of New Zealand and there is a possibility that the debaters may speak here in August. They are to leave Christchurch on August 14, and are expected to arrive at Dunedin on August 17, after visiting Mount Cook, and an endeavour is being made to stage a debate in Timaru between those dates or, failing that, after August 20 on the team’s return from Dunedin.
