GENERAL NEWS

In Bankruptcy. His Honour Mr Justice Johnston, in the Supreme Court yesterday approved a motion for the annulment of the bankruptcy of Archibald Campbell Duncan, and granted Samuel Frederick Hanson a discharge from bankruptcy. Fair view Reservoir. The new Fairview water supply scheme was officially opened yesterday, the initial ceremony taking place at the reservoir. Those who attended the function were surprised to see a thin coating of ice on the surface of t.he water in the reservoir, evidencing the severity of the cold in this district of late. Kerbing and Channelling. The programme of kerbing and channelling in the borough has been commenced a good deal earlier this year. In fact, the work has not previously been undertaken during the winter, but that so far completed has proved successful, the workmen having exercised extreme care to protect the concrete from the frosts. Calculations Upset. While returning from a .function at Fairview yesterday, a motorist upset the calculations of two small boys who were playing football on the street. As the car passed, the ball bounced in front of the machine, hit a head lamp, bounced up on to the bonnet, and remained on the car for a distance of about 100 yards. The lads thought the ball was lost for keeps. A Reasonable Speed. After a witness in the Supreme Court yesterday had told the Crown Solicitor (Mr W. D. Campbell) that the car in which he was travelling was driven at a reasonable speed, Mr Campbell asked him what he meant by a reasonable speed. "Kaye Don might call 100 miles an hour a reasonable speed,” added Mr Campbell. Mr C. S. Thomas: “Yes, and even Kaye Don can get into trouble.”

Wool-Stealing. A proposal from the Feilding branch of the Farmers’ Union that wool dealers should be placed on the same footing as secondhand dealers, and be required to keep a record of all wool purchased, was discussed at a meeting of the Feilding A. and P. Association. After a short discussion, the association unanimously decided to support the proposal. On the suggestion of Mr H. Stewart it was decided to include in the proposal a recommendation that dealers in, wool and skin should be licensed by the police.

Comfort in Church. A Hamilton resident, who desires to remain anonymous, has given more than £3OO to the trustees of St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Hamilton, for the purpose of upholstering the pews of the church, states a correspondent. In making the gift the donor stated that he considered the church should possess seating accommodation equal in comfort to that of a picture theatre. The work of upholstering the seats is now in hand. Another anonymous donor has presented St. Paul’s wfi 1 ' a handsome baptismal font executed in stone as a tribute to Mrs Peat, mother of the present minister, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday.

Dangerous Work. Parapets on city buildings are considered dangerous in earthquakes, but from what occurred in Willis Street Wellington, on Friday afternoon, it seems that their removal can also be dangerous to citizens. Workmen were engaged in removing the parapet from a building, and were lowering masses of masonry into a waiting lorry by means of a rope sling when one piece, which must have weighed about half a hundredweight, slipped out of the sling, and fell with a thud on to the woodblocks clear of the lorry and only a foot from the side channel. Had anyone stepped off the pavement in that spot at that moment it would have meant serious injury, if not death.
