ORR-WALKER CUP TROPHY RETAINED BY TIMARU CLUB
The annual cross-country race for the Orr Walker Cup was. run on Saturday over a seven-mile course, which had been well prepared. The Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, West End. and Timaru Harrier Clubs were represented in the field of 32 runners. The field was despatched by Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the presence of an interested crowd of spectators. R. Barlow assumed the lead, and showed the way to the field until Grant's Hill was reached, when his team-mate, W. Taylor, made the pace, until the next two miles had been covered. At this stage, the order was: R. Barlow, W. Taylor, R. Holmes, G. McKirdy, W. Holmes, A. McArthur, T. Shivas, who were closely followed by H. Valentine, A. Harper, and E. C. Segar. I. Mathieson and C. Mathieson. After crossing several paddocks, where the going was heavy, the runners passed the power station on Grant’s Hill. The field was led here by W. Taylor, and six seconds later came R. Barlow, R. Holmes, 21 seconds behind, H. Ward, 31seconds, G. McKirdy, 40 seconds, and L. Williams 46 seconds behind the leader. T. Shivas was 49 seconds back. A. McArthur and W. Holmes, running together, were 63 seconds behind, followed by A. Harper. H. Valentine, E. C. Segar, I. Mathieson and C. Mathieson. The course then lay towards the Smithfield FreezingWorks. R. Holmes, who had been running strongly all the way, passed Barlow and Taylor, and showed the field the way to the tape, having covered the distance in 37min 32sec. The placings were:—
n. vaieuune aw The Timaru Harrier Club retained the Cup with 29 points, the winning members being, R. Holmes, H. Ward, A. McArthur, T. Shivas, and W. Holmes. Presbyterian Harrier Club was second, the team being, R. Barlow, W. Taylor. G. McKirdy, E. C. Segar, and I. Mathieson, with 37 points. A very cordial welcome was given the runners on their return to the Bay Tea Rooms, hot soup being provided by the generosity of the donor of the trophy, Mr Orr Walker, who congratulated the Timaru harriers on their very fine performance in the race, and on ret. ’.ning possession of the trophy. Mr Orr Walker also referred to the consistent running of R. Holmes and complimented the winner on his good judgment over the distance. Mr Orr Walker presented Mr J. Eaton, who has been notified of his transfer to Blenheim, with a travelling rug. wishing him every success in his future home. Mr E. D. Mcßae also congratulated Mr Eaton on his promotion and advised him to continue his connection with the sport on reaching Blenheim. All present gave three hearty cheers for their departing club-mate, on the caff of Mr E. C. J. Foot. Mr Hetherington moved a vote of thanks to the officials and pickets, and this was readily accorded. Mr A. McArthur, captain of the Timaru Harrier Club, thanked Mr Orr Walker for his hospitality and many kindnesses to the harriers in past seasons.
