ASHWICK FLAT

(Contributed) The sodden state of the land is causing serious delay in the sowing of autumn crops, with a result that much less wheat will be sown this autumn than formerly. With the present short days and frosty nights, there is little drying of the fields, and farmers are marking time with odd jobs till teams are able to get going again. One sees occasional lines of hoggets not doing too well, but on the whole stock ar? facing the winter in good order. The turnip crop has been a very uneven one. In most cases there have been good crops of oats, which will help to tide over the winter. The settler is now able to review the result Of his year’s work and draw up his annual balance sheet which seldom reaches the high hopes one starts out with in the spring. Many farmers have some or all their wheat still in store where it is undergoing a slimming treatment for an ailment acquired during the recent unseasonable weather. On the result of this treatment depends in many cases the difference between a credit and a debit balance for the year’s work. Lambs have fattened slowly owing to damp and cold conditions and some will be carried over. And now the film of life is running through and there are some brighter spots in the picture than was the case last year. May be those brighter hues will spread and brighten those shady places where the sunshine of prosperity has not penetrated for so long. The new school committee is now well established and can be relied upon to give a lead to the social endeavours of the district. The following are the committee: —Messrs M. Black (chairman), W. Allan, E. Doyle, H. Galbraith and D. Grant. A movement is on foot to form a tennis court at the school, and as a means to this end a euchre party and dance is to be held fortnightly until further notice.
