TRADE IN AUSTRALIA
SWING TOWARDS BETTER QUALITY GOODS. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, May 29. Speaking of the improved state of trade in Australia, Mr J. Abel, president of the Wellington Manufacturers' Association, who returned to-day from a trip to the Commonwealth, said that a pleasing feature was the definite swing of all trade towards better quality goods. He remarked that at the Clyde Engineering Works, Sydney, 1200 men were now employed, against 160 two years ago. One motor firm was behind in deliveries of cars to the extent of 800 vehicles. There seemed no doubt that Australia had thrown off the depression. It seemed that New Zealand was in every respect in as good a financial position as Australia, and all that was required here was to create confidence so that people would loose their purse strings.
