PULPIT AND FOOTBALL
RECTOR AS A PROPHET. A London rector appeared in the role of a football prophet recently when, from the pulpit, he assurred his congregation that Chelsea would escape relegation. He was the Rev. Robert Halton, rector of St. Mary-at-Hill, Eastheap. “I suppose it is a bit unusual,” he said after the service, “to hear a parson give a Soccer forecast from the pulpit. But we are a London church and we naturally hope that the London clubs will win. Christ dealt with simple things in his parables, and I try io link my sermons with topical events.” The rector, in his sermon, had prophesied an exciting finish to the Soccer season. Football was his first love. He was a well-known amateur player in Lancashire and cherished hopes that one day he would play in the professional game. “But of course." he says, “I never realised that ambition."
