SWARMS OF PESTS
GERMANS BEGIN DRIVE ON COCKCHAFERS. LUBECK, May 10. A plague of cockchafers descended to-day over the north of Germany, swarms covering the fields in Schles-wig-Holstein and the regions surrounding Hamburg and Lubeck. The ground was covered so thickly that thousands of citizens earned the Government premium of a mark (1/-) per cwt, the swarms being so thick that the insects could literally be shovelled into bushel baskets. In Mecklenburg all the schools were closed for the day so as to enable the children to join in the extermination gangs.
