“MONTH TOO LATE”
BLUFF TO MELBOURNE SERVICE CRITICISM IN AUSTRALIA United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 20, 11.11 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 20. Mr L. J. Schmidt, the New Zealand I Trade Commissioner, advises that much pleasure has been expressed in Victoria generally with the decision to provide a direct passenger service from the South Island, via Bluff, to Melbourne, for the Centenary celebrations, and for the coming summer tourist season. The authorities controlling the Centenary programme, however, express dissatisfaction because, in their opinion, the service commences a month too late. Mr Schmidt has been to Melbourne during the past week, finalising arrangements for specially priced and attractive tours for South Australian and Victorian residents who, as a result of the new service, will be able to visit New Zealand via Bluff at a considerably reduced cost, and without losing the time occupied in going via Sydney and Wellington to the scenic spots of the South Island.
