TRAGIC ADVENTURE

FATE OF SOVIET BALLOONISTS. United Press Association—By Electric Tel egraph Copyright ' (Received May 20, 6.33 p.m.) MOSCOW, May 19. It is revealed that the Soviet balloonists, Dr. Schrenck and Herr Masuck must have been asphyxiated, through the failure of the oxygen apparatus, two hours after the start of the flight. The balloon drifted with the dead men for twenty-four hours across Europe. When the balloon was low, Dr. Schrenck’s body fell out. The gondola dragged across the country for miles, until entangled in the wood, where Herr Masuck’s body was found. A message published last Wednesday stated that Germany's biggest balloon, which ascended from Bitterfield last Sunday morning for the purpose of measuring the intensity of the sun’s rays in the sub-stratosphere, had been found wrecked on Monday afternoon near Dunaberg, on the Russo-Latvian frontier. The mangled body of Herr Masuck, a meteorologist, was found nearby, but the body of Dr. Schrenck was found 11 miles away. The state of the instruments indicated that the balloon crashed at midnight on Sunday.
