For the first time in history Sussex were captained by a professional, Tate skippering in the absence of Melville, who was injured. Hendren and six other professionals walked out of Lord’s through the professional gate, whereas at Chelmsford. Swansea, Hove, Cambridge and Oxford amateurs and professionals entered the field by the same gateway. Thus Middlesex reverted to the unwanted rule, which many counties have abandoned. To-day’s County matches resulted as follows: Hampshire v. Middlesex. Hampshire—First innings, seven for 450, declared (Lowndes 80, Mead, not out, 179). Second innings, two for 50. Middlesex —First innings, 281 (Hendren 72). Baring six for 82. They followed on, making nine for 320, declared (Hart 121). Creese took five for 90. Hampshire won on the first innings. Sussex v. Gloucestershire. Sussex—First innings, eight for 406, declared (Cook 73, J. Parks 181). Gloucestershire —First innings, 101. Tate took five for 26. They followed on, making 167. Tate took four for 48; James Langridge took four for 41, Sussex won by an innings and 138 runs. Glamorganshire v. Yorkshire. Glamorganshire—First innings, 243. Smailes took six for 70. YorkshireFirst innings, 351 (Mitchell 104, Leyland 126). Yorkshire won on the first innings. Lancashire v. Oxford. Lancashire—First innings, 420 (Paynter 143). Oxford—First innings 232 (Townsend 82). They followed on, losing four for 206 (Mitehell-Innis, not out, 83). The match was drawn. Cambridge v. Northamptonshire. Cambridge—First innings, 226. Matthews took four for 63. Partridge four for 52 Second innings, eight for 248, declared (Bartlett 94) Northamptonshire—First innings 111. Second innings, 205 (Bakewell 79). Cambridge won by 158 runs.
