CONTRACT BRIDGE

“SQUEEZE HANDS. (Written for “The Herald” by William Shackle). The following hands will be found helpful as they explain the process used when it is necessary to make an extra trick by means of the squeeze. Z-Y have bid to a Grand Slam on the following, Z to play the hand in No Trumps.

A opens with his correct card, fourth from top of longest and best suit, 5 spades. Y takes with Jack and Z decides to leave the lead in Dummy. He could have overtaken with Ace but as he could only lead through once he decided that the hope of making 4 tricks in spades so poor a risk as not to be worth considering. First he tries out the Heart suit in order to see if he can make 4 tricks m that suit only, however, to find that B blocks this suit too. His next hope is that Queen and Jack of Clubs are in one hand, without any cover, but on playing one round of clubs, he learns that such is not to be, for only 2 small clubs fall on his high card. Nothing “coming off” he has to play to squeeze that extra trick which means so much to the score. The following shows the play of each card.

Another little problem in which 2 playing no Trumps has to make the last 7 tricks:

Try it out for yourself before reading further, as by so doing, one is able to make the most of one's own cards when such problems arise.

If B plays 4 Hearts Z drops his Club 4, and makes his 2 Hearts. If B drops his Club 9 Z plays his Heart 5 and makes King of Hearts and 4 Clubs.
