DAME CAMPBELL
FAMOUS WOMAN CIVIL SERVANT. Dame Janet Campbell, whose engagement to marry Mr Michael Heseltine, Registrar of the General Medical Council of Britain has been announced, is probably the most successful of women civil servants. She was senior medical officer for maternity and child welfare at the Ministry of Health for fifteen years, but her Government ser/ice actually dates from 1915, when she joined the Liquor Control Board. Retiring from the Ministry of Health last year, she now- spends most of her time gardening. Much of the decline in maternal and infant mortality since the war is ascribed to her work. She has a special genius for organising. In 1920, Dame Janet went to Australia at the invitation of the Commonwealth Government to assist in the fight against maternal and infant mortality there, and stayed for six months. She met her future husband some years ago when he was assistant secretary to the Ministry of Health before taking up his present apprintment.
