CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

ANNUAL MEETING HELD MR G. D. VIRTUE ELECTED CHAIRMAN The annual meeting if the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held last night, Mr A. P. Greenfield presiding over a good attendance. The annual report and balance-sheet previously published, were, on the motion of the president and Mr G. D. Virtue, adopted without discussion. Officers Elected. The president declared the following officers elected unopposed: President, Mr G. D. Virtue; vice-president, Mr C. S. Hammond; council, Messrs A. J. Allport, H. H. Dobie, W. G. Irwin, J. M. Jenkins. A. M. Kilgour, W. T. Ritchie, W. M. Sexton, F. S Shrimpton and W. I. Tait; immediate pastpresident, Mr A. P. Greenfield; auditor, Mr A. C. Martin. Mr Greenfield said he was pleased to welcome Messrs Dobie and Sexton to the Council. Mr Sexton had been a member of the Hamilton Chamber and Mr Dobie should be another valuable member. Mr-Virtue acknowledged the confidence of members in electing him president. He congratulate! Mr Greenfield on his successful term of office during a difficult period, and especially mentioned Mr Greenfield’s endeavours to arouse interest in harbour matters. On the motion of Mr Virtue, Mr Greenfield was accorded a vote of thanks. Mr Hammond thanked the meeting for his election to the vice-presidency, and Mr Sexton acknowledged Mr Greenfield’s welcome. Mr Greenfield thanked the newspapers for their assistance during the year, and said he felt sure that no member had had any cause for complaint when reading his reported remarks after a meeting. The capabilities of the secretary (Mr J. Leggott) were mentioned by Mr Greenfield. Mr Leggott, he said, had the confidence of every member of the Chamber, which was indeed fortunate in having an officer of his calibre.
