STRUCK BY TORNADO
WIDE DESTRUCTION IN NEW ORLEANS. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 27, 7.15 p.m.) NEW ORLEANS. March 26. A tornado struck the downtown section of the city, approximately 100 buildings in an area a mile long and several hundred feet wide being destroyed or damaged. Twelve persons were injured and were sent to hospital, while scores of others sustained minor injuries, and 700 are homeless. The property damage is estimated at between 50,000 and 250,000 dollars. Torrential rains accompanied the wind, while the semi-darkness added to the fright of the people, many in the French quarter of the city standing in porches, burning holy candles, and uttering prayers that they might escape with their lives.
