GERALDINE

FUNDS FOR SCHOOL BAZAAR TO BE HELD The proposal to conduct a queen carnival to raise funds for the Geraldine District High School Committee was discussed at a meeting of parents and householders in the Parish Hall on Thursday evening, when the motion carried to that effect at a previous meeting was rescinded, and it was decided to conduct a three days’ bazaar and gymkhana towards the end of February’. Mr A. J. Burmester presided over an attendance of about 50. The chairman stated that, even with the grant from the Education Board, the School Committee did not have sufficient funds to meet the demands upon it, and every year it was necessary to raise money. Since the meeting last week there had been considerable dissatisfaction at the decision to hold a queen carnival in aid of the school funds. However, approximately 200 notices to parents had been sent out through the children, but only 15 or 20 respond rd. The present meeting could discuss the question, and, if a better means of raising money were proposed, the previous decision could be rescinded, and they could take another line of action. Mr H. W. W. Williamson remarked that he had spoken to several people who had thought that the present time was not opportune for the holding of a queen carnival. The business people were having a sufficiently bad time without a carnival to make a serious drain on the people’s finances. If they could confine the carnival to a three or four days’ bazaar perhaps it would be wiser to do so. In reply to a question by Mr C. C. Knight, the chairman said that it was not a question of how much the School Committee would need to raise. As things were at present the committee would have an overdraft at the beginning of the next financial year. The committee never seemed to have any funds; the Board's grant had been reduced, and It was very difficult to make ends meet. The committee hoped to build up a reserve and to hand over a credit balance to their successors. If they could raise £IOO it would last, with the Board’s grant, for about four years wtih Judicious management. After a discussion Mr Knight moved: “That the previous motion that a queen carnival be held in aid of the school funds be rescinded, and that another line of action be discussed.” The motion, which was seconded by Mr H. W. W. Williamson, was carried unanimously. Mr Williamson moved that a threeday carnival be held on the lines of that held to raise funds for the purchase of the Geraldine District Band’s Instruments. The motion was seconded by Mr D. J. Lack, and carried unanimously. It was decided that the carnival be held towards the end of February, to take in the second sale day of that month. The following committee was elected: Mesdames F. W. Grayburn, W. H. Mitchelmore, J. Dean and B. Hayes, and Misses M. Cruickshank and M. Grant; Messrs C. C. Knight, A. J. Burmester, H. W. W. Williamson, C. Hayward, E. P. Bennett and A. W. Tucker. At a subsequent meeting of the committee, Mr A. J. Burmester was elected chairman, and Messrs C. C. Knight and H. W. W. Williamson joint secretaries. HEAVY RAIN. Steady rain fell yesterday afternoon. DOUBLE “STAR” PROGRAMME.
