BUILDERS ANXIOUS WORK HELD UP The South Canterbury Builders' and Contractors' Industrial Union of Employers recently discussed the Unemployment Board's latest circular regarding the building subsidy, and in regard to the cessation of the subsidy scheme, passed the following motion: Is the local Unemployment Committee aware of any definite action on the part of the Unemployment Board in regard to future State assistance, or j otherwise, as the present uncertain position is definitely preventing anticipated jobs from proceeding?" The inquiry was received by the Unemployment Committee at its meeting last night, the chairman (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) stating that the committee had better pass the question on to the Board as soon as possible. In moving that the letter be forwarded to the Board. Mr P. B. Foote said that the committee had no more information on the subject than the builders. Mr J. McCort: Are the builders holding work up in a hope of receiving the subsidy? The chairman: No, people are holding off in anticipation. Mr McCort: That is the same thing. The motion, which was seconded by Father Murphy, was carried. : Mr J. Lang asked the number of men employed in Timaru under the , building subsidy scheme, j The certifying officer (Mr G. McKessar' said he could not tell exactly, ! but he thought that the number was I about 20.
