A BIG OUTBREAK | CONFECTIONERY FACTORY GUTTED By Telegraph —Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. October 16 Fire of unknown origin destroyed a large part of the plant and premises of the Chivers Confectionery Co., Ltd.. 246 St. Asaph Street, this evening. The building, which was of brick and wood, was the property of the estate of Elizabeth White, and was insured in the Norwich Union Insurance Society. The stock and plant were insured for £20.000 with the Mercantile and General Insurance Co. Nobody was in the building when the fire broke out, and everything appeared normal when the last employee left at 5.30 pm. The alarm was given by a passer-by, shortly after 6 p.m.. but the fire was then burning strongly and the highly inflammable contents fed the fire so that it quickly increased in violence. The greater part of the factory was gutted and most of the machinery damaged beyond repair. The brigade subdued the outbreak quickly, but the rapid spread of the fire caused damage before the flames could be checked. DAMAGE IN AUCKLAND. By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND. October 16. Fire Ih the city late to-night gutted the third floor of a five storey brick building at the corner of Albert and Durham Streets occupied by Reid and Twiname, manufacturers and importers, and S. A. Smith and Co . Ltd., manufacturers agents. An explosion on the third floor blew out the corner windows. The brigade was just checking this outbreak when another occurred elsewhere on the same floor.
