MUSICAL AFTERNOON SPLENDID ENTERTAINMENT The monthly meeting of the Oran Women’s Institute held last week, took the form of a musical afternoon. The president (Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald >, presided over a large attendance of members and friends. Routine business was held over, and the president called on Mrs Hall, of the Timaru Musical Circle, to open the afternoon’s proceedings. The Circle then gave two glees, followed by a pianoforte solo by Mrs N. D. Mangos: two solos. "Snowflakes" and “Extaste," by Mrs W. I. Tait; “My Dear Soul" and “Arise Oh Sun," by Mrs Mclnnes; pianoforte solo. Miss 3. Mangos; trios, “On a May Morning" and “To a Wild Rose.” by Mesdames Hall. Rule and Mclnnes; two glees by the Circle: “I Know Where I am Going," and “You Lovely Thing.” Mrs Waters: pianoforte solo. Miss B. Mangos: "The Last Song." and “The Birthday,” Mrs Tait: "The Star,” Mrs Waters; pianoforte solos. Mrs Mangos; two glees by the Circle. Mesdames Unwin. Macdonald and Sharpe then thanked the visitors for the delightful afternoon's entertainment. Mrs LeCren suitably replied, thanking the members of the Institute for the enjoyable time spent in Orari. A cake and apron stall in charge cf Mesdames Smith and Dormer brought in 30The sales table in charge of Mesdames Blissett and Black also did good business. The hostesses were Mesdames W. Hughes. F. Hughes. T. Hughes and Misses G. and E. Hughes. YOUNG PEOPLE'S DAY. Young People's Day was held at ,he Geraldine Presbyterian Church on Sunday when large congregations attended both the morning and evening services. At the morning service a children's choir, trained by Miss E. Sherratt sang an anthem. The Rev. W. J. Couling took as his subject: “The Charity of Dorcas.” A special youth service was held in the evening when Mr Couling was assisted by Messrs R. Hayes, T. Askin and F. Shearer, members of the Senior Bible Class, who read the Lessons and announced the hymns. Mr Couling preached an eloquent sermon entitled: "Why I am a Presbyterian." The choir sang the anthem "God So Loved the World” (Stainer). Mr C. S. Davies was at the organ, CATHOLIC MISSION. A large congregation attended the evening service at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Sunday, when the Rev. Father P. Kane S.M., opened a week's mission under the auspices of the Marist Fathers. The Rev. Father Kane was assisted by the Rev. Father J. Herbert S.M. Father Kane delivered an eloquent address on the text: “It is appointed under Man once to die, and after death the judgment.” Large congregations attended the two Masses yesterday morning, and the evening service was also well attended. The Mission will be continued daily throughout the week. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs W. Anderson. Macdonald Street, have left on a motortour to Nelson. Mr F. W. Pennefather, of the Christchurch Branch of the Union Bank of Australia, is relieving Mr Anderson at the local branch. Mr R. Patrick is on a holiday visit to Christchurch. Mr E. Cholerton, proprietor of John R. Procter’s, the Premier Opticians, Christchurch, will be visiting Geraldine on Wednesday, the 25th October, and may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel.
