PEEL FOREST

ST. BARNABAS GUILD. A meeting of the St. Barnabas Guild was held in the Sunday School room. Mrs G. Dennistoun presided, and the following members were also present— Mesdames D. G. Rutherford, W. E. Barker, T. Stinson, Y. Robinson, S. Upritchard, J. M. H. Tripp, F. Popplewell, F. Claydon, W. Inglis, L. Heney, G. Wooding, T. Smith, O. Keen and W. Macphail; Misses O. Barker, O. Stinson, R. Blissett, J. Cliffe and R. Barker. Visitors present included Mesdames E. S. Foden, P. Scott, G. Cocks, J. Rees, Rowse, Patterson, Charles, and Miss W. Johnstone. Captain Pearce, of the Church Army, who was present, gave an address telling of the work that the Church Sisters (numbering 640) and the men’s army of over 500, have accomplished and are still carrying on throughout the world. Mrs W. E. Barker and Miss O. Barker, with a band of helpers, dispensed afternoon tea. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. The annual dance and presentation of trophies of the Peel Forest Miniature Rifle Club was held in the hall on Thursday evening. The function proved to be one of the most successful dances staged by the club for a number of years. Visitors were present from Lowecliff, Hinds, Coldstream, Rangitata, Geraldine and Temuka. Before calling on Commander Dennistoun to present the trophies, Mr F. Stevenson thanked all donors of trophies, and also Mrs W. Jenkins for giving a cake for a competition. Commander Dennistoun, the club’s president, after r. short address, presented the trophies, as follows:—Miss E. Jenkins’ trophy, J. Chapman; Mr Y. Robinson’s trophy, J. Rees; Miss R. Blissett’s trophy, G. Smith; Mrs O. Keen’s trophy, F. Stevenson; Mr W. Harris’ trophy, H. Ford; Mr G. Wooding’s trophy, E. Allan; Mr J. Turton's trophy, L. Evans; Mr F. Cain’s trophy, highest aggregate for the season, W. Jenkins. The Dennistoun Cup, for the last five nights’ aggregate off the rifle, was won by W. Jenkins. Mrs G. Dennistoun, the donor, presented the cup to the winner. During the evening several novelty dances were held. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr G. Cain and Miss M. Charles, and a lucky spot waltz was won L: Mr G. Stevenson and Miss B. Johnstone. The statue dance was won by Mr Blissett and Miss R. Blissett. A cake given by Mrs W. Jenkins was won by Miss Jean Cain. Music for the dance was supplied by Messrs A. Popplewell, W. Shutt and W. Foldrey (bagpipes). Mr W. Foster was master of ceremonies.
