WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

PAREORA. The monthly meeting of the Pareora Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday, Mrs J. A. Munro presiding. Mrs R. Rouse was welcomed as a new member. Sympathy was extended to Mrs R. Barr, whose mother is seriously ill. Delegates to the conference gave a report of the business discussed. Members freely expressed their opinions that Institutes will derive more benefit by suporting their own district federation instead of the Dominion Federation. The impression of the delegates attending the meeting was that the Institute was getting away from the principle of the Institute movement. On the motion of Mrs P. Coote a vote of thanks was passed to Miss K. Midgley, who gave a demonstration of tinfoil picture work. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames P. Coote, S. Creasy and A. Wallace. To celebrate the birthday of the first Institute baby, Mrs P. O'Connor asked the president to cut Shona O’Connor’s birthday cake. Mrs Munro on behalf of the members thanked Mrs O’Connor for her kindly thought, and wished Shona many happy returns of the day. Suggestions were received for next year’s programme. In the fun competition, “Grocers’ Mistakes,” Miss M. Coote was first and Miss M. Munro second.

A social half hour was spent in dancing and singing, with Mrs T. Pooke and Miss M. Coote at the piano.
