THIRD SOCCER TEST

WON BY AUSTRALIA AFTER FINE STRUGGLE. United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 25, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 25. Australia beat New Zealand in the third soccer test at Sydney Cricket Ground to-day by four goals to two. Bitterly cold weather affected the attendance and only a thousand were present. The teams were:— New Zealand—Zuill, Sftone, Gerrard, Stenhouse, Christie, Graham, Ives, Chapman, Kershaw, Groves, Kay. Australia—McNabb, Laidlaw, Evans, Osborne, Taylor, O’Connor, F. Smith! Edwards, G. Smith, Cameron, Crowhurst. Referee—Mr Harris. The New Zealanders gave their best exhibition of the tour. The scores do not indicate the even nature of the match, but the old trouble of failing to seize chances near the goal mouth was responsible for defeat. The inside forwards lacked dash, though they combined well. Kay, on the wing, played his usual spectacular game, but shot too much at the net, instead of passing to the inside men. Australia was first to score, Edwards catching a rebound from Zuill, and netting. The half-time scores were:— Australia l New Zealand o Australia scored the second goal when Crowhurst, running in from the right wing, tricked Gerrard and the custodian. A determined effort by New Zealand followed, to prevent the test hat trick. Kershaw opened the tourists’ account with a nice goal, Ives on the wing being mainly responsible for the opening. The excitement was intense when New Zealand got a penalty kick in front, and, Kershaw again succeeded. Smith, the Australian centre, came into the picture with a brilliant goal, heading the ball into the net from a corner kick by Ives. Smith again netted, when Zuill misjudged a run from the goal mouth in an attempt to clear. Smith netted into an open goal. There was no further score: Australia 4 New Zealand 2 The New Zealand forwards played good football, but lacked the understanding evident in the local combination. Gerrard and Stone were giants in defence. Zuill, except for one mistake, was really brilliant. It was a good clean game, played in a fine spirit. Crowhurst was outstanding for the winners. Christie has slowed down, although still a great tactician. Goals were scored for Australia by G. Smith (2), Edwards one, and Crowhurst one. Kershaw scored two goals (one penalty), for New Zealand.
