SCHOOL JUBILEE

ST. JOSEPH’S CONVENT. At the conclusion of the second service, at St. Joseph’s Church yesterday morning, a meeting was held in St. Joseph’s Hall to take the initial steps towards celebrating the jubilee of St. Joseph’s Convent School in October. The Rev. Father Outtrim presided over a good attendance of parishioners, who for the most part were ex-pupils of the school. Father Outtrim explained the object of the meeting, and suggested electing a committee to make arrangements for the jubilee. He said that Bishop Brodie (Christchurch), would be in Timaru in the early part of October, and possibly they could make the jubilee coincide with his Lordship’s visit. As a programme, he would suggest the observance of Requiem Mass in the morning, an entertainment in the afternoon, and a social in the evening, at which a presentation could be made to *l)t Sisters Of course a lot would depend on the finance at the Committee’s disposal, and he would like to see a permanent memorial of the jubilee. The enlarging of the chapel in the convent was a real necessity, and perhaps they could make this their objective. Mr J. Leonard said that, with Mr McGarva, he had drawn up an estimate of the cost of lengthening the chapel by about 12 feet. The cost would be in the vicinity of £l4O or £l5O. It was then unanimously agreed that the jubilee be held over two days. Miss K. McShane was elected secretary, and Miss P. Spillane, assistantsecretary. A committee of twelve, with power to add. was elected as follows:—188393, Mrs Quinn, Mr O. Connolly; 18951903, Mrs Thomson, Mr T. Brosnahan: 1903-1913 —Messrs L. Gaffaney and W. J. Tozer; 1913-1923, Miss P. Story, Mr T. Dwan; 1923-1933, Misses P. Spillane and A. Leonard. Miss Beri was elected treasurer, and the names of Mrs L. J. Wareing and Messrs P. Lynch, H. Brosnahan, J. Leonard and M. Coffey were added to the Committee. After the general meeting the Committee met, Father Outtrim presiding. The chairman stated that already a good number of donations had been received. It was agreed to endeavour to hold the jubilee on a Wednesday and Thursday, the latter being the halfholiday. A picnic for children, with adults was decided on, and a jubilee ball is to be held. The subscription was fixed at 5/-, and a canvass of districts agreed upon, representatives from each district being appointed for this purpose. Mrs W. J. Tozer and T. Dwan were appointed to act with the secretary in drafting circulars to be sent to expupils.
