On Friday evening in the Druids' Hall in the Friendly Fridays card tournament, Druids played Oddfellows and Citizens met Hibernians. With music from guitars and other stringed instruments, members of the Arowhenua Maori Institute and their friends made merry at the social evening given in the Maori Hall on Friday evening by the Institute. Euchre card playing, dancing and musical items comprised the evening’s programme. Card games were won by Mrs K. Rehu 1, and Mrs T. Shaw 2, in the women’s section; and by Mr Iwi Rita 1. and Mr T. Anglem 2, in the men’s. Musical numbers were given by Mrs Hansen, and Messrs H. Barrett, I. Rita, G. Williamson and T. Hemi. Mrs T. Beaton presided at the piano. Mr T. Waaka was M.C. FOOTBALL COACH HONOURED. On Saturday evening Mr J. Scott, coach to the senior fifteen of the Temuka Football Club was honoured by .mbers of the team and friends at a’ dinner given by Mr M. Coffey at the Empire Hotel. Mr L. Connolly presided, with him being Mr Scott, Mr A. Gaffaney, captain of the team, Mr G. Gaffaney, captain of the Old Boys’ team, and Mr H. Woodley. Temuka Club captain. In a short speech, Mr Connolly explained that the dinner was given by Mr Coffey to enable the team to make a small presentation to Mr Scott as a token of thanks from the players, for the keen interest Mr Scott had always taken in the team. (Applause). In asking Mr Scott to accept a case of pipes, Mr A. Gaffaney thanked him, on behalf of the team, for the neverfailing interest he had taken in its welfare. The players Very much appreciated Mr Scott’s keenness, and did their best to put into practice the knowledge he imparted to them. (Applause) . After several other speakers had endorsed these remarks Mr Scott replied and thanked the players for their kind action. He said that he was pleased to see that his coaching was bearing good results. (Applause). The gathering then sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” An apology was tendered for Mr Coffey’s absence, on account of indisposition. A pleasant hour ended with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne.” PERSONAL. Reference to the illness of Miss Amelia Peebles, a playing member of the Kerrytown Basketball Club, was made at a meeting of the club held last Thursday afternoon, by the president (Mr F. Naughton). who said that Amelia would be missed very much by her comrades. A motion of sympathy was carried and hopes for a speedy recovery expressed. Ml' P. W. Campbell, M.A., first assistant at the Temuka District High School, has been transferred to the Christchurch West High School. Mr Campbell will not leave Temuka for some time yet. Mr J. Grant, the young Temuka man who was seriously injured in a motor accident at Peel Forest some time ago. is progressing favourably at his home in Temuka. Constable J. Southworth, whose departure on transfer to Otira was held up on account of illness, will leave Temuka shortly. His health has now greatly improved. Mr W. H. Stevens, who was engineer to the Temuka Borough Council for the East Side drainage scheme, was in Temuka on Saturday. Mr Stevens came to Temuka from Oamaru at the request of the Council to inspect that portion of the pipe line at Orari that has recently been laid bare for an inspection of its condition. GENERAL NEWS. Changeable weather was experienced i in Temuka yesterday, sunshine and : rain alternating during the day. The Temuka Organised Unemployed j held a dance in the Drill Hall on Sat- ! urday evening. The attendance was not large, but a pleasant time was j spent. The takings were in the j vicinity of £2.
