GERALDINE
THE WEATHER. Conditions were bright and fine yesterday, with a light but keen wind. BOYS’ WELFARE LEAGUE. The Boys’ Welfare Committee continues to do useful work, and since it was set up about ten months ago, approximately 20 positions have been found for unemployed boys. Since the recent departure of the treasurer (Mr F. J. C. Turner) for Taranaki Mr N. S. Wallach is acting secretary. MAORI MISSION CHOIR. Under the auspices of the Methodist Home Mission Department, the Rev. A. J. Seamen’s Maori Choir presented a delightful entertainment before a large audience in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening. The repertoire included poi dances, hakas, songs and instrumental music of a charm and artistry greatly appreciated by the audience. RIFLE CLUB DANCE. An enjoyable dance was held by the recently-formed Pleasant Valley Women’s Rifle Club. Mr P. Henwood and partner won the waltzing competition and the statue dance. Mr T. M. Robinson acted as M.C., and extras were played by Mrs J. R. Sharpe and Miss E. Gregan. A competition for an iced cake was won by Mr T. Watson. THE W.C.T.U. The president (Mrs F. H. P. Wallach) occupied the chair at the monthly meeting of the Geraldine Branch of the W.C.T.U. in the Presbyterian Hall, when there was a large attendance of members and several visitors. The meeting was opened by Mrs J. F. Coursey, and Captain Smith of the Salvation Army Corps, led in prayer. Owing to illness, the Cradle Roll Superintendent (Mrs C. W. McKenzie) resigned her position, and Mrs McKeown was appointed to the vacancy. Appreciation of Mrs McKenzie’s services, and the hope that she would speedily recover, were expressed. As Mrs H. A. Bell and Miss M. Bell propose to take up their residence in Timaru, a letter of appreciation and a transfer were given to Mrs Bell and a small memento to Miss Bell, who made an appropriate acknowledgement on behalf of Mrs Bell and herself. The president read a greatly appreciated paper on “White Ribbon Day,” which was being observed throughout the Dominion. Captain Smith was elected a member of the branch. The meeting was closed in the customary manner by Mrs A. Borrell. The afternoon tea hostesses were Mesdames Alley, Iveson and D. Macdonald. NOTES.
