UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE. The Temuka Unemployment Committee met on Tuesday evening. Present: Mr A. W. Buzan (chairman), and Messrs F. C. May, W. F. Evans, T. H.' | Langford. T. Dwan, G. Hancox, Mrs I Hewson, A. Leslie and the secretary j (Mr L. Durey). Two applications were received for ! labour under the No. 5 Scheme. One was referred to the county engineer (Mr C. E. Bremner) for approval, and the other was left in the hands of Mr T. H. Langford to report back to the executive. The secretary was instructed to give notice to relief workers that their levy bpoks must be produced to the foreman before commencnig work on Monday morning next. The Certifying Officer reported that the medical superintendent in Timaru would attend at the Courthouse, Temuka, on Wednesday next, June 14th. to make a medical examination of men unfit for work under the No. 5 Scheme. ST. JOSEPH’S SOCIAL. St. Joseph’s euchre and dance on Wednesday night was another success, a large crowd attending. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss A. Hannifin and Mr T. Horgan Mr W. Seeler was M.C. MINIATURE RIFLES. The following were the scores recorded at the weekly shoot of the Temuka Miniature Rifle Club on Wednesday night:— T. Greelish 77, W. McGillen 76, V. Nicholas 75, E. In the ladies’ section the best scores were as follows: Mrs Donnithorne 74, Mrs Templeton 73, Miss McClintock 73, Mrs Jones 66 Miss Ward 64, Miss McFarlane 63, Miss H. Cain 63, Mrs Taylor 61, Miss M. McFarlane 59, Mrs Scannell 44. Miss McGillum 39. The winner of Miss Ward’s trophy was Miss McLintock. BASKETBALL. There were two surprise wins in the Temuka and District Basketball SubAssociation’s competitions yesterday afternoon. Otherwise the games resulted in much the manner expected. In the senior B grade, Seadown, which was without a win to its credit, beat Winchester by 11 goals to 10, and in the junior Temuka Young Women’s A notched its first win against Milford, who were equal with two other teams at the head of the championship tbale. The score ” tls to 6 in the Young Women’s ia * The other senior B game was between Temuka Young Women and Geraldine Northern. The Geraldine girls won by 11 to 9. In the senior competition Temuka Young Women beat Clandeboye by 15 to 4, and St. Joseph’s accounted for High School Old Girls by 14 to 8. Junior results were: Clandeboye 15 beat H.S.O.G. 3; Kerrytown 25 beat Temuka B, 0; St. Joseph’s 13, beat Geraldine, 2; Pleasant Point 17, beat Arowhenua 1; Temuka A 7, beat Milford 6. WEDDING. BERWICK—SPENCER. The wedding took place on Saturday morning at St. Peter’s Church, Beckenham, Christchurch, of Mary Helena, second daughter of the late Mr and Mrs W. Spencer, Temuka, and Ernest, second son of Mr and Mrs Stephen Berwick, Manchester, England. The Very Rev. Dr. J. Kennedy officiated. Mr H. Spencer gave away his sister, who wore a white satin frock made in Empire style, with a centre panel extending in a point to the V neck-line in front and falling to the hem of the frock. The softly shirred bodice had sleeves, Vhich were puffed over her shoulders, and then fitted tightly to fall in points over her wrists. Her embroidered net veil was held in place by a coronet of orange blossom, and her bouquet was composed of mixed white and cream flowers. The bridesmaid, Miss Evelyn Maran, wore a frock of powder blue crinkle crepe, made with square neck-line, puffed sleeves, and a plaited girdle tying in a bow at the back. Her little velvet swathed turban was in a deeper shade of blue, her bouquet was of mixed gold flowers. Mr R. Coxon was best man. A reception was neld at the home ot Mrs E. Hollobon, Worcester Street. The hostess received her guests wearing a navy marocain coatee and frock, with white collar and cuffs and a navy hat. Mrs Fitzgerald, aunt of the bride, wore a black satin coat and black felt hat. Miss B. Spencer, sister of the bride, was in black and white crepe de chine, and hat to match. Mrs H. Spencer wore a nigger brown costume and brown felt hat. For travelling, the bride wore a navy blue tailored suit, a navy felt hat, and a musquash fur coat. Mr E. Cholerton, proprietor of John R. Procter’s, Ltd., the Premier Opticians, Christchurch, will next be visiting Temuka on July Bth. Appointments can now be made by ringing the UJ’.S. Dispensary, No. 240 M
