SERIES OF CHARGES.
BURGLARY, THEFT AND ASSAULT. TWO MEN CHARGED. A sequel to the arrest of Leslie Richmond Henderson and Leslie Pearce in Timaru on Friday last, was their appearance before Messrs A. L. Gee and A. P. Greenfield, J.P.’s, in the Timaru Police Court on Saturday morning, on a charge of breaking and entering the business premises of Thomas Edgar Shiels, coal merchant, at Temuka on Thursday evening, and stealing therefrom four shillings. Inspector Bird, who appeared for the Police Department, asked for a remand to Temuka on Wednesday morning. He stated that the accused were arrested on Friday when in charge of a car stolen from Dunedin, and a large quantity of stolen goods had been recovered from a house in Timaru where accused had been staying. There would be further charges of breaking and entering at Temuka, and also charges of breaking and entering and theft at Palmerston South. Furthermore, there were charges pending against the accused at Dunedin of assault with intent to rob a bank and a motor garage, by using water pistols containing corrosive fluid. “We are not prepared to go on with these cases to-day,” said Mr Bird, “and therefore we are asking for a remand.” Accused were remanded to appear at Temuka on Wednesday at 10.30 o’clock.
