FATAL ACCIDENT.
MIDNIGHT COLLISION AT VIADUCT. YOUNG MAN KILLED. While crossing Stafford Street towards Caroline Bay viaduct shortly before midnight on Saturday, Frederick John Kaye, a young Timaru resident, a hairdresser by occupation, who resided with his parents at Grey Road, collided with a motor-car which was proceeding north along Stafford Street, and died a few minutes later as a result of serious head injuries received. It is understood that the car, which was driven by John Garland Keith Cliff, 21 years of age, of Evans Street, Timaru, who is employed as a carpenter at Waitaki Hydro Works, Kurow, was travelling down Stafford Street hill towards the intersection of Hewlings Street, Stafford Street and Wai-iti Road, and when opposite the Bay viaduct deceased was seen running across Stafford Street from the west side towards the viaduct. The pedestrian, it is said, appeared to run straight into the left-hand side of the car. The wind-screen on this side of the vehicle was shattered where Kaye’s head had apparently struck. The driver of the car immediately summoned Dr. C. A. Paterson, but Kaye died a few minutes after the impact. He sustained terrioie head injuries. An inquest for identification purposes is to be opened this morning before Mr A. L. Gee, J.P., and a jury of four.
