UNEMPLOYED TEACHERS.

QUESTION OF PROVIDING WORK. The question of providing work for unemployed teachers will probably be considered by the Canterbury Education Board at its next meeting. A return of the teachers who are out of positions at present is to be furnished to the board by the secretary (Mr C Kirk). On the grounds of economy the Education Department has this year enforced more stringent regulations to govern the appointment of relieving assistant teachers, with the result that some who would ordinarily *have positions for a little time at least have now to look for work in other quarters. It is leported that there are some teachers now working on unemployed relief works.

One suggestion that has been advanced for the absorbing of the teachers out of work at present is that some of the money contributed to the Unemployment Board’s funds should be used in giving teachers staff positions, the basis of the No. 5 unemployment scheme. The secretary to the Christchurch Unemployment Committee (Mr P. R. Climie) told a reporter that this would be impossible under present regulations governing the scheme, as the money was for expenditure by local bodies, while teaching was Government work. He thought that for teachers to be employed under a subsidy from the Unemployment Board a scheme would have to be submitted to the board by the Education Boards.
