CYCLING.

TIMARU CLUB’S DERBY RACE. A successful Derby race was run by the Timaru Cycling Club last evening when a field of 12 riders faced the starter. The course from Saltwater Creek to Gleniti Store and back, a distance of about seven or eight miles proved a good one for the youths, there being only one hill, and the rest of the distance all flat road. The winner turned out to be J. Depree, off 2i mintes, who also gained fastest time by a very small margin. J. Parfitt, off 4 minutes, gained second place after riding very well, with H. Dodds off the same mark, a short distance away third. The limit men, McAlwee and Dellow, rode exceptionally well, being in the leading bunch and finishing in fourth and fifth places. These boys did very well for their first ride, and should show up well next season with a little more experience. Christie and Baker rode well off 1 a minutes, Baker gaining second fastest time. Welch and Bennington also rode well. . The scratch men could not gain anything on the other riders, Mitchell having a mishap just before the turn, when a handkerchief caught in his chain and brought him off. Davie, riding fairly well, could not make up the gap by himself. The finish was very closely contested, and the time made (19min ssecs), was very good ! for youths. The following were the placings:— J. Depree (2*min). 19min ssec .... 1 J. Parfitt (4min), 20min 37fjec .... 2 H. Dodds (4min), 20min 39sec .... 3

J. Depree also gained fastest time. R. Baker (12min), time 19min 57sec, was second fastest.

This race concludes this season. The Club has had over a dozen new riders, and have run a good number of races.
