FOOTBALL.

ZINGARI CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The twenty-fifth annual meeting of the Zingari Football Club was held last night, the president, Mr S. Williams, presiding over an attendance of about fifty members. The chairman welcomed the large gathering, stating that the presence of such a number of young players augured well for the Club. He thanked the officers for their support during the year, especially the secretary and treasurer for the work they had accomplished. “We did not have many workers,” said Mr Williams, “as quite a few did not turn up when they should have done. I hope that when you are electing your committee for the coming year you will pick men who are prepared to do their bit. It is only fair to competition teams,” he said. 4

The chairman welcomed the hon. secretary (Mr C. Dewar) to the meeting. voicing the club’s sympathy with him in his recent illness, and the pleasure that was felt in his recovery.

Annual Report. In moving the adoption of the annual report (which has appeared in the “Herald”), the chairman said that although they did not win many senior competition rounds, a young team had performed very creditably, and should do better this season. The fourth grade team had performed exceptionally well in winning the competition, and the coach (Mr King) was deserving of thanks for his interest. The fifths were a young team who showed good promise, and the coach (Mr Stevenson) hoped to elevate a number of them to fourth grade ranks. The financial side of the club was sound, there being a credit balance of £22. This spoke well for the treasurer (Mr Williams) and the secretary (Mr C. Dewar). The latter had been responsible for inaugurating a very successful art union. The motion was seconded by Mr E. Ives, and carried without discussion.

Election of Officers. The election of officers resulted:— Patron. Mr J. Howey; president, Mr Stan Williams; vice-presidents, Messrs Geo. Wardell, S. Home, C. Triggs, J. Mcßobie, H. S. Lamb, A. King, O. Robertson, F. Harris, G. Fairbrother, G. Dore. J. Williams and Dr C. S. Fraser; club-captain, Mr J. Wilkinson; deputy-club captain, Mr J. Christmas; hon. secretary, Mr C. J. Dewar; assist-ant-secretary, Mr R. Judge; hon. treasurer, Mr E. Sullivan; delegates to South Canterbury Rugby Union, Messrs G. Fairbrother and J. Williams (Mr S. Williams declined nomination); hon. auditor, Mr G. Fairbrother; committee, Messrs L. McAteer, E_ Ives, T. Dore, A. Robinson, W. Currie, A. Stevenson and A. Solomon; coaches: senior, Mr A. Stevenson; junior, Mr J. Williams; third grade, Mr A. King; fourth grade, Mr F. Ward; fifth grade, Mr H. Gibbs; match committee, Messrs A. King jnr., E. Ives and the president. The following new members were elected:—-Messrs W. G. Cockroft, T. Probyp, G. Cox, W. Murphy, L. O’Brien, J. Jacobs, M. Newman, W. Currie, J. Hunt, H. King, J. Cox, S. Smith, W. Southgate. F. Thompson, A. Lobb, H. Hadlee, P. Bell, A. McDonald, and A. Gibson. Messrs L. L. Macbeth and Geo. Whitehouse, wrote tendering their resignations from the Club. It was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr Whitehouse for his assistance to the Club as a vice-presi-dent for many years. The resignations were accepted with regret. General. The South Canterbury Rugby Union wrote advising that the Club had been granted Fraser Park for Easter Saturday. A similar application had been received from the Star Club, and had been granted also, it being understood that mutual arrangements would be made between the clubs in regard to gate receipts. Ten per cent, of the gate receipts must be paid to the Union for the use of the Park. Acknowledgment of the Club’s gift of a silver cup to the South School was received from the School Committee. Referring to the Queen Carnival held last year, Mr A. King said that members of the Zingari tug-of-war team had won their grade, but had not yet received their cups. They had paid their nomination fees in both junior and fifth grades, but had not received their dues. Some other competitors had not even paid their entrance fees, and it was only fit and proper that the winners should receive their cups or have their entrance money refunded. “They are only defrauding people by doing such a thing,” said Mr King. The president pointed out that Zingari representatives had given the matter their consideration, but it was understood that the affairs of the committee had not yet been wound up. Last year the Club had written to the Rugby Union, who declined to accept liability. Mr King: “It is not the cups we are worrying about, but the principle involved.”

It was agreed, on the motion of Mr King, to again approach the Rugby Union on the matter.

Opening day was fixed for March 21st, and it was agreed to apply for Wednesdays for training nights.

Thanks were accorded the officials, and to the ladies for their assistance at all times.

Mr Fairbrother urged that all members should support the Club by prompt payment of subscriptions. Because the Club had a small credit balance was no reason why members should not give their best attention to financial assistance.
